Gracie Jordan and her therapy dog Atlas, made their way to the Midwestern Transplant Office in downtown Pittsburgh as planned, on time, the next morning to start their day of work. She’d heard all about the catastrophe at the Spring Valley Medical Center the day before, but the reality was that the transplant center processed the paperwork for donated organs for hospitals all across the country. As much as Spring Valley was out of the loop at the moment, it didn’t mean that the other hospitals weren’t. They couldn’t close. They had no reason to do so. People still needed donated organs.

Pulling in behind the small storefront where she worked, Gracie parked in the back, let Atlas out of the back seat of her station wagon, and grabbed her work bag, which included a book, her tablet, her lunch, and her journal. It seemed there was always downtime during the day after she had gotten her paperwork done. Having things to keep her occupied made the day go faster.

Atlas, a mottled brown pit bull mix, stood by her side waiting patiently, his red service dog vest clearly visible, his mouth hanging open, a perpetual smile on his face. Atlas was big and square with broad shoulders and short, sleek fur, his long snout and long tail were the only indication that he was mixed with some other breed besides pit bull. Gracie loved bringing Atlas to work. She’d had him trained as a therapy dog to give herself something to do on the weekends when she wasn’t working.

Gracie unlocked the back door to the transplant office, keyed in the code for the alarm system as she walked in and flipped on the lights, striding to the front door and unlocking it as well. She took Atlas off his leash and watched him as he wandered over to his dog bed at the front of the office. He circled twice and then flopped down in a spot where he could watch the people and cars go by.

The Midwestern Transplant Office was housed in a standalone brown brick building with a green awning, the bright white letters painted on the fabric announcing who was occupying the space. Wide windows and a glass door let in lots of natural light, which Gracie loved. In the front of the building there was a long counter and then two desks behind it, one of which was Gracie’s. A wall partitioned off the back offices, which were currently unoccupied, a supply room and a bathroom.

Lucas Burke walked through the front door, flipping the sign from closed to open as he did.

“Good morning, sunshine!” he bellowed, a wide grin plastered across his face.

Gracie smiled. Lucas was one of those people who was perpetually in a good mood.

“Good morning to you too. I hear happy birthday is in order. Is today the day?”

He held up a white bakery box in front of him. “It is! Guess what I brought?”

Gracie’s eyes went wide. “Did you get doughnuts from Larry’s bakery?”

“You know I did.
